SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fluxion Biosciences, a leading provider of functional cell biology platforms for life science research and drug discovery, today announced that it has won a 2008 R&D 100 Award for its BioFlux™ 200 System. The R&D 100 Award places the state-of-the-art BioFlux System in the prestigious company of previous winners such as liquid crystal displays and the anticancer drug Taxol.

Known as "the Oscars of Invention", the R&D 100 Award showcases the most significant new technologies commercialized worldwide. This year, R&D Magazine recognized Fluxion for a combination of research and manufacturing excellence in developing the BioFlux System. Based on novel microfluidics technology, the BioFlux System helps researchers understand disease processes and identify therapeutics in such disease areas as cardiovascular, immune disorders, and infectious diseases.

The BioFlux System integrates the ease of use of standard well plates with the biological relevance of a flow-based assay. The system enables functional live-cell assays in a high throughput format, delivering physiologically relevant data much earlier in the drug discovery process than conventional approaches.  The system is used routinely to study cellular interactions, including cell adhesion, transmigration, and biofilm formation. Introduced in 2007, the BioFlux system is used globally by leading pharmaceutical companies and research institutes including the University of California at San Francisco, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Stanford University, Kimberly Clarke, University of London, and the National Institutes of Health.

"We are honored to be recognized by R&D Magazine for our new microfluidics technology and to be ranked among the world's top technology innovators," said Mike Schwartz, BioFlux Program Director. "The BioFlux System is an example of Fluxion’s strength as a leading technology developer for the life sciences. It's gratifying to see recognition of our commitment to provide enabling products and technologies that improve the research activities of our life science customers worldwide."
